<description>The Phylaxis Society and the Iowa Masonic Library
The Phylaxis Society’s relationship with the Iowa Masonic Library goes back to the beginning of the Society. An article titled The Iowa Masonic Library appeared in the third issue (August 1974) of the Phylaxis magazine. The editor’s note states:
“The Phylaxis Society invited Bro [Jerry] Marsengill to write an article on the Masonic Library in Cedar Rapids, so the Prince Hall Family would learn of its existence and will freely use its facilities. “
In the fourth issue (January 1975) of the Phylaxis magazine Society President Joseph Walkes, Jr. wrote an article titled The Phylaxis Society and the Iowa Masonic Library. In this article he wrote that “the Phylaxis Society has an excellent working relationship with the library…” and “encouraged the entire Prince Hall fraternity to utilize its facilities.” He also “urged all Prince Hall Grand Lodges that publish official organs, Grand Lodge Proceedings, histories and general Masonic literature to send copies to this library”.
A photo of the Iowa Masonic Library is on the cover of the Winter 2007 issue of the Phylaxis magazine, which has two articles about the Iowa Masonic Library:
Iowa Masonic Library
By John B. Williams, current President of the Phylaxis Society
Iowa Masonic Library: A Research Mecca
By Alton G. Roundtree
The Iowa Masonic Library now has a Walkes Collection that has over two hundred items that were donated to library by Phylaxis Society Founder and President Joseph Walkes, Jr.
