I read about Bannack and the story of the Masons in Montana in a book called "What Law There Was" by Al Dempsey. One can buy it used from a few sellers on Amazon.

After reading that book, I scheduled a visit to Bannack State Historic Park while doing a driving tour of Montana. It was quite an experience, standing in that lodge room where Masonic feet had trod so long ago. I stood in the East, West and South looking out, circumambulated the lodge once, and just listened. I felt sure that I heard whispers of ritual. It was spooky, yet very heartening. I departed with a whispered, "alas, Brother, alas."
